Rainbow Rotunda

transforming a historical synagogue into affordable housing

I was commissioned by the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation of Pittsburgh to paint fence artwork for a historical synagogue transforming into affordable housing units.

The Rotunda is an economic development project transforming the historic B’nai Israel Synagogue into 45 affordable housing rental units with the hopes of building an artistic community. My piece, Rainbow Rotunda, is a modern-day fairy tale that envisions the past, present, and future of an inclusive Pittsburgh neighborhood in a magical context. The piece pays tribute to real historical houses from surrounding neighborhoods, Steelers stars, and the BIPOC pride flag, all towards the hope that all who travel through this land will find the power and magic to express themselves creatively. It was printed on a 4 ft x 6 ft vinyl canvas that will live outside the development alongside artwork from 8 other local artists.
